Fertility, Acupuncture and IVF

Can Acupuncture help women become pregnant?

Within the last 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of couples having problems conceiving a child, the reason’s for this are many and varied, increased stress levels,  increased hormones in our water supplies. It is estimated that as many as 25% of couples in the UK  may have trouble conceiving with a large number of this being unexplained problems.

So how and does acupuncture work to improve fertility whilst undergoing IVF?

There has been some research on the subject of Acupuncture and  Fertility that suggest that Acupuncture can help to support couples undergoing IVF, IUI (Intratuerine insemination), ICST (Intractoplasmic sperm injection), ICST (Intractoplasmic spermincection and FET (Frozen embryo transfer.)

Acupuncture can help by preparing the body before these procedures to enable a well balanced healthy body, it is also reported that acupuncture can increase the blood flow to the reproductive organs, it can help balance hormones, regulate menstrual cycles and improve the thickness of the lining of the uterus and quality of the eggs released.

In 2002 a team of German researchers discovered that acupuncture significantly increased the number of women who fell pregnant whilst undergoing IVF  among a group of 160 women with 45% of the becoming pregnant compared to a group who received no acupuncture and only 26% got pregnant. Since then there have been further small studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture and fertility one German and Danish study both showing positive results regarding when is the best time to receive acupuncture whilst undergoing IVF.

Going through IVF for a couple can be one of the most stressful experiences of their lives  acupuncture can help to calm the body throughout the process, as undue stress can have a negative effect on hormones in the body. Acupuncture can also help to manage some of the side effects of the drugs used throughout the process.

There is no doubt that more trials need to be performed around the subject of Acupuncture and IVF  on larger groups of women using random double blind trails and some experts have claimed that it is the placebo effect of acupuncture  leading to it’s effectiveness suggesting that it is the clients belief in Acupuncture that has lead to  positive results.  In our experience at the Wellbeing Clinic we have many clients that come for acupuncture with very little knowledge on the subject before arriving so I for one find this very hard to believe that acupuncture works only on a placebo effect. However even if that is your belief using acupuncture as a way to reduce your stress levels and prepare your body for pregnancy can only be a positive thing however it works.
